Esther's Follies is absolutely an Austin classic. I don't think that you could find any up-to-snuff Austin To-Do list without at least a mention of the famous (or infamous) comedy show on (Dirty) Sixth Street. The Follies feature an SNL style collection of skits featuring some of the greatest comedians and actors in Austin. The skits are incredibly timely, and are always being updated to reflect current events. However, there are a few staple skits (Patsy Cline pulling golf clubs from her bra comes to mind) that are old favorites and can be seen all the time. Also, a pretty legit magician with a penchant for creeping out patrons sitting on the front row performs between skits and impresses everyone.
I recently attended a show at the Follies with a group of my friends, and none of us were disappointed. This is absolutely one of those Austin-y things that you just need to do. You will enjoy it.
Tickets range in price from $18-$27 depending on time of week and type of seat, and I highly recommend booking your seat ahead of time on their website in order to guarantee admission. Weekend shows in particular are always packed, and probably always will be.
Verdict: This Austin original lives up to the hype. You won't be disappointed after a night at Esther's Follies.
